Family words carry more weight in Algeria than their English translations suggest. خويا means my brother and is also what you call a man your own age you have never met. Older strangers become عمّي or خالتي, uncle and aunt, without any family connection at all.
Get these right and you sound like somebody who grew up around Algerians. Get them wrong and you sound like somebody reading from a phrasebook, which is a different thing entirely.
