French words inside Algerian Darija

A significant amount of ordinary Algerian speech is French, said the Algerian way, and treating that as a corruption to be avoided will make you sound stranger rather than purer. If everybody around you says normalement, saying it is not a failure of your Arabic.

Fifty one entries here, and you will notice most of them have no Arabic column, because they are written and thought of as French words. What they have is a distinctively Algerian job to do.

The meaning has often shifted

This is the part that catches French speakers out. normalement in Algerian speech does not always carry the sense a French speaker expects, and the same is true of several others here. A learner who already knows French sometimes does worse with this page than one who does not, because they assume they already understand it. Read the glosses rather than skipping them.

The pronunciation is Algerian, not French

These words have been in the language long enough to have been reshaped by it. Said with a careful French accent they sound foreign. Said the local way they disappear into the sentence, which is what you want. The recordings on this page are the point of it, more than the spellings.

The safe method is the usual one: use them where you have heard them used, with people like the people you heard using them.

Then listen for them. Once you know these fifty are in there you will start catching them in speech that previously sounded like an unbroken wall of Arabic, and that alone will make conversations easier to follow.
