Phones, internet and messages in Algerian Darija

More of your Darija will happen through a phone than face to face, especially if you are learning because of family abroad. Voice notes, missed calls, no credit, bad signal, calling somebody back. It is a whole register and it is almost never taught.

Two hundred and sixty five sentences here, which makes this one of the larger sentence pages, and most of them are things you would say in a message rather than in a room.

Voice notes are the way in

Algerians send voice notes constantly, and for a learner they are the single best practice available. They are short, you can listen four times, you can reply when you are ready, and nobody is standing in front of you waiting. If you have family who send them, stop skipping to the transcript. Listen twice, then reply with one sentence of your own.

Credit, battery and signal

ما بقاش عندي فليكسي, I have no credit. الباتري راهي تسالي, the battery is going. These are the everyday small emergencies of a phone conversation and they are said constantly. Notice how much French is sitting inside them, which is exactly how technology vocabulary works in Algerian speech.

Written Darija has no fixed spelling

When people write Darija in messages they use Latin letters and numbers: 3 for the ayn, 7 for the ha, 9 for the qaf. That is the same system used for the pronunciation column throughout this site, which is deliberate, so that what you read here is what you will see in a real message. There is no official spelling and you will see variation. Do not let it worry you.

What to do with this page

If somebody sends you voice notes, reply to the next one in Darija even if it is one sentence and even if it is wrong. A written message you can edit forever; a voice note is speech, with all the pressure of speech and none of the panic, and it is the closest thing to a free conversation partner most learners have.
