The sounds of Algerian Darija

The letters that decide whether you sound Algerian: 3, 7, 9, kh, gh, and the ones that vanish.

This is the page that decides whether you sound Algerian or foreign, and it is the one most learners postpone. That is the wrong order. Pronunciation habits set early and are painful to undo later, and there are only a handful of sounds standing between an English speaker and being easily understood here.

A hundred and thirty two entries covering the letters that cause the trouble: ع, ح, ق, خ, غ, and the sounds that quietly disappear in ordinary speech.

Three numbers you need to read

Throughout this site, and in every Darija message anybody sends you, 3 is ع, 7 is ح and 9 is ق. They are not codes to be decoded, they are letters, and after a day you will read them as fluently as any others. That single convention makes the whole library readable without knowing the Arabic script, which is the point of it.

The pair that proves it matters

حمار is a donkey. خمار is a headscarf. One sound apart, and this page gives you both so you can hear the difference rather than be told about it. There are several pairs like this. They are the best argument anybody can make for spending an hour on sounds before spending fifty on vocabulary.

Vowels vanish and that is why you cannot hear the words

A great deal of what makes spoken Algerian hard for beginners is not exotic consonants, it is that short vowels drop out and words collapse together. A sentence you can read perfectly becomes an unbroken run of consonants at speed. Knowing this is happening is half the battle, because you stop assuming you have missed a word you never knew.

What to do with this page

Spend one hour here before anything else. Play each letter, say it, record yourself and compare. It is dull and it is the highest return hour in the whole library, because every single word you learn afterwards inherits the sounds you settled on today.
