Travel and getting around Algeria in Darija

This page is for when you are moving: the taxi, the bus, the train, the road. It is where a lot of learners have their first real conversation with a stranger, usually because they had no choice.

A hundred and sixty three sentences, and unlike a vocabulary page these are whole lines you can say as they stand. وصّلني ل, take me to. بشحال للمطار, how much to the airport. بالعدّاد, on the meter. خلّي الباقي, keep the change.

The taxi is five sentences long

Where to, how much, on the meter, stop here, keep the change. That is the entire language of an ordinary taxi ride, and it is worth memorising as five fixed blocks rather than five things to assemble. A taxi is a small pressured space with the meter running and it is not where you want to be doing grammar.

Ask the price before you get in

A language point that is also practical advice. بشحال is the question and it belongs before the door closes rather than after. Having it ready and saying it naturally, rather than hesitantly, changes the answer you get. This is one of the few places where sounding confident in a language is worth actual money.

Understanding the answer is the hard half

You will manage the question. The reply comes back fast, possibly with a price, a route and an opinion about the traffic. Learn the numbers page properly and learn ما فهمتش, I did not understand, and you have a way through: ask, fail to catch it, say you did not catch it, get it again more slowly. That loop is what fluency actually looks like early on.

What to do with this page

Memorise the five taxi lines this week. Say them out loud until they are boring. Then add two: asking where the bus goes, and asking to be told when to get off. With those seven you can move around an Algerian city on your own, which is a genuine and satisfying milestone and it costs one evening of work.
