Weddings, holidays and occasions in Algerian Darija

What you say at a wedding, at Eid, at a funeral, and when somebody has good news.

Occasions are where a guest is most visible and most likely to be lost. A wedding, Eid, Ramadan, a funeral, somebody's news: each has phrases that are expected, and saying nothing is noticed in a way that saying it imperfectly is not.

Eighty three sentences here, including the ones nobody thinks to teach: how to say you are fasting, how long until iftar, and how to say politely that you are not Muslim if you are asked, which happens kindly and often.

Congratulation and condolence are fixed

These are not phrases you compose. Each has a form and, as with greetings, a reply that comes back at you. Learn both halves. At a wedding or a funeral you will hear the same line dozens of times, which makes them easy to acquire once you have decided to listen for them rather than smile through them.

Ramadan has its own daily vocabulary

راني صايم, I am fasting. شحال باقي للفطور, how long until iftar. راك صايم, are you fasting. Whether or not you fast, these run through every conversation for a month and you will be asked. Having a comfortable answer ready, in either direction, makes the whole month easier.

Answering about your own religion

لا، ماشي مسلم is on this page. It is asked without hostility, usually early, and often more out of practical curiosity than anything else. Having a calm, short answer prepared means the question does not derail you, and it is better to have chosen your words in advance than to improvise them at a table full of people.

What to do with this page

Find out what is coming. If there is a wedding this month, learn the wedding lines this week. If Ramadan is near, learn those five. Occasion language is the clearest case in the whole library where learning just in time beats learning in general, because you will use it intensely for a few days and then not for a year.
