Talking about feelings in Algerian Darija

Happy, tired, worried, in love. How Algerians say what they feel.

Saying how you feel is not a soft extra. It is how you explain yourself when something has gone wrong, how you decline an invitation without offence, and how a conversation moves from transaction to relationship. A learner who can only exchange information stays a customer.

This page has happy, tired, worried, annoyed, in love and the rest, a hundred and two entries, with the phrases that go around them as well as the words themselves.

Tired and stressed are said constantly

تعبان and مقلّق and their neighbours come up many times a day in ordinary Algerian speech, far more often than the equivalents in English conversation. They are used lightly, as a normal answer to how are you, not as a complaint. If you answer every greeting with fine you are missing most of the register, and if you say you are tired you are not being negative, you are being ordinary.

The reason usually follows immediately

Feeling words rarely travel alone. I am tired because, I am annoyed because, I am happy that. The words that make that join live on the page about linking your ideas, and the two pages work best together. A feeling with no reason attached invites a question you may not be ready for; a feeling with its reason already attached is a complete turn in a conversation.

Do not translate the English intensity

English hedges feelings heavily. A bit tired, quite annoyed, fairly happy. Algerian tends to say the thing and let context do the softening, and a learner who stacks qualifiers can end up sounding evasive rather than polite. Say the word plainly. If you want to soften it, do it with your face and your tone, which is what everybody around you is doing.

What to do with this page

For one week, answer the how are you greeting with something other than fine. Use a different word off this page each day and add one clause of reason. It is a small exercise and it will teach you more about the rhythm of Algerian conversation than an hour of study, because the reply always comes back and the reply is the part you cannot practise alone.
