Politics, news and money in Algerian Arabic

The vocabulary of a television bulletin and an argument about it.

Algerians talk about politics and the news constantly and at volume, and they do it in a register that sits between the street and the broadcast: Darija structure carrying a lot of Standard Arabic vocabulary. That mix is what makes news hard for learners who are comfortable in one and not the other.

A hundred and thirty one entries: the words of a television bulletin, and the words of the argument about it afterwards.

The hedges come first

ما نعرفش بزّاف, I do not know much about it, and سمعت بلّي, I heard that. These are on this page and they are the most useful things on it for a learner. They let you take part without claiming to be an authority, and they let you report something without asserting it, which in a political conversation is exactly where you want to be as a guest in somebody else's country.

Bulletin vocabulary is more classical

إجراءات and تدابير and their neighbours are Standard Arabic words used inside Algerian sentences. If you are also studying MSA you will find this page easy and it will pay you back in both directions. If you are not, treat these as vocabulary to recognise when you hear the news, rather than words to produce in a cafe.

Listening is where this page earns its keep

The realistic use of this vocabulary is understanding, not speaking. Put on an Algerian bulletin with this page open and you will find the same thirty words coming round again and again. After a week the shape of a news item becomes predictable, and predictability is most of comprehension.

What to do with this page

Learn the hedges first, all of them, properly. Then learn twenty nouns and listen to one short bulletin a day with the page beside you. Do not try to speak this register until you can follow it, because a political opinion delivered in half learned vocabulary is the one mistake in this library with social consequences rather than merely linguistic ones.
