Paperwork and offices in Algerian Arabic

Documents, queues, stamps and the vocabulary of getting things done.

Anybody who lives in Algeria for any length of time ends up in an office with a queue and a form. Anybody who visits family there ends up helping somebody else in one. The language of documents, counters and stamps is not glamorous and it is very hard to do without.

A hundred and eighty seven entries: the documents themselves, the words for open, closed, busy, forbidden, missing, and the phrases for asking what is needed and when to come back.

Learn the words that appear on signs

مفتوح, مشغول, ممنوع. Open, busy, forbidden. Reading these instantly, without working them out, saves you a great deal of standing in the wrong queue. They are short, they are everywhere, and they are the cheapest useful reading practice in the library.

The three questions that matter

What do I need, when are you open, and where do I go now. Almost every administrative problem reduces to one of those. Learn each as a fixed sentence rather than assembling it, because you will be asking under mild pressure with somebody waiting behind you.

Politeness does real work here

يعطيك الصحّة and the other courtesy phrases carry more weight across a counter than they do almost anywhere else. The person on the other side has had a long morning. A learner who greets properly, asks simply and thanks warmly gets noticeably better help than one who is grammatically superior and abrupt. This is not a language point but it is the most practical advice on this page.

What to do with this page

Take the reading words first, the ones on doors and signs, and learn them by sight until you do not have to decode them. Then learn your three questions. Then, and only then, come back for the vocabulary of specific documents, which you can look up when you actually need a specific document.
