Question words in Algerian Darija

What, where, when, how much. The words that turn a sentence into a question.

A question word is the cheapest sentence in any language. You do not need grammar, you do not need a verb, and half the time you do not even need a full phrase. وين. شحال. علاه. One word and you have asked something, and the person in front of you now does the hard part of the conversation for you.

That is why this page is worth more than its size suggests. Sixty entries, and with the first ten of them you can already get an address, a price, a reason and a time out of a stranger. For a beginner that is the difference between standing in a shop silently and getting what you came for.

The Algerian ones

Some of these will look familiar from other Arabic and some will not. علاه for why is very Algerian. كيفاش for how, واشنو for what, وقتاش for when, شحال for how much: these carry the ash ending that runs right through Algerian speech and that you will start hearing everywhere once you know to listen for it. If you have learned Arabic from a book you may reach for a different word out of habit. You will be understood, and you will also be marked as someone who learned it from a book.

The tone does as much as the word

Algerian questions often have no special word order at all. The same string of words is a statement or a question depending on how it rises at the end, which means a learner who says everything flat will be misheard as making claims rather than asking. This is not a rule you can revise. It is a habit you copy. Listen to the recordings on this page and copy the shape of the line, not just the sounds in it.

Short is polite here

English softens questions by making them longer. Would you mind telling me how much this is. Algerian does not work that way, and a long question can land as strange rather than polite. شحال with the right face is perfectly courteous. The softening comes from your tone and from the greeting you gave first, which is another reason to have the greetings page fluent before you lean on this one.

What to do with this page

Take the first six words, and for each one write three real questions you would actually ask this week. Not textbook questions. Where is the pharmacy, how much is the taxi, why is it closed. Say them out loud. You will find you have built about twenty usable sentences out of six words, which is the best return on effort anywhere in this library.
