Algerian street slang

The words young Algerians actually use, and what they really mean.

This page is small on purpose. Slang moves faster than any library can, a word that was everywhere in Algiers three years ago can sound dated now, and the fastest way to embarrass yourself in a language is to use young people's vocabulary slightly wrong.

So what is here is a small set of words that have stayed put, with what they actually mean rather than what they look like they mean. طوپ for excellent. زهر for luck. راه يدير فيها for somebody putting on an act.

Understand it before you use it

The honest advice is to treat this page as listening vocabulary first. You want to know what people are saying about a film, a match or each other. You do not need to say it yourself, and a learner who deploys slang in the first year usually gets a laugh they did not intend. Understanding without producing is not a lesser skill, it is the correct order.

Register is the whole difficulty

Every word here belongs to a particular kind of speaker in a particular setting. The same word can be friendly between two young men and rude from a stranger to an older woman. There is no rule that will tell you which is which. There is only listening to who says it, to whom, and copying only that pattern.

Where the real street language lives

If what you want is the way people actually talk rather than a list of slang words, the pages on jokes and teasing, on football, and on the fixed sayings will get you much closer. Real informality in Algerian is carried more by rhythm, teasing and proverb than by a vocabulary of special words, and those three pages have far more of it than this one.

What to do with this page

Read it, do not drill it. Then go and listen: Algerian television, a football commentary, a video of two friends talking. When you hear one of these words in the wild, note who said it and to whom. That is the only reliable way to learn this part of a language, and it is the reason this page is short rather than long.
