Food is the easiest way into a language because it is the one subject where you are guaranteed a daily, low stakes, repeated conversation with somebody who wants the exchange to go well. The man selling you bread is on your side. He would like to understand you. Use that.
This page has what is on the table, what to ask for, and how to say it was good. A hundred and sixty five entries, which is more food vocabulary than you need for a year of ordinary life, so take the first twenty and come back for the rest.
Bread, tea and the words around them
خبز and أتاي will each come up several times a day. So will the words for water, coffee, sugar and salt. These are the highest frequency nouns in the whole library and they are worth learning to the point where you do not think about them at all, because you want your attention free for the sentence around them.
Praising the food is not optional
In an Algerian house, saying the food was good is not a compliment you may pay if you feel like it. It is part of the meal. There is a set of phrases for it and they are used every time, and a guest who eats well and says nothing reads as cold rather than shy. The health words from the greetings page do a lot of this work: صحّة is said over food constantly. Learn two ways of saying it was good and use them both.
Ordering is a small script
Asking for something in a cafe or a shop follows a pattern that barely changes: greeting, request, quantity, thanks. Once you have the pattern you can swap the noun and the whole thing works for anything. That is why this page is worth more than its word count. You are not learning a hundred and sixty five separate things, you are learning one script and a hundred and sixty five things to put in it.
What to do with this page
Pick the five foods you actually eat and the two drinks you actually order. Ignore the rest for now. Build one ordering sentence for each, say it out loud, and use it tomorrow. Vocabulary you use tomorrow stays. Vocabulary you might use one day does not, and this page is large enough that trying to learn all of it at once is the surest way to learn none of it.
