Algerian Arabic greetings and courtesy

Hello, goodbye, please and thank you, and the reply that goes with each one.

In Algeria a greeting is almost never one line. Somebody says a thing and there is a particular thing you say back, and if you do not say it the exchange feels unfinished to both of you. السلام عليكم has وعليكم السلام waiting for it. صحّيت, which is thank you and means may you stay healthy, has يعطيك الصحّة coming the other way. Learn them singly and you will always be half a beat behind. Learn them in pairs and you sound like somebody who has been here before.

This is also the part of the language you will use the most and think about the least. A day in Algiers might contain forty of these and two real conversations. Get them fluent and everything after them is easier, because you have already bought yourself thirty seconds of goodwill before you say anything difficult.

Health is the currency

Notice how often صحّة turns up on this page. It is thanks, it is well done, it is enjoy your meal, it is take care. صحّة فطورك is said over food. صحّيت is what you say when somebody hands you something. يعطيك الصحّة is what a shopkeeper says as you leave. One word doing the work that English spreads across five, and it tells you something about what politeness in Algeria is built on. If you only take one word off this page, take this one.

The reply matters more than the opening

Most learners arrive able to greet and unable to answer. Somebody says لاباس عليك and they freeze, because the textbook taught the question and not what comes next. Read this page in pairs. Cover the second column and see whether the reply comes to you before you have thought about it, because in a real doorway you will not have time to think about it.

Where it goes wrong

The two mistakes are register and speed. Register: a greeting between friends is not the greeting you give somebody's grandmother, and using the warm one with a stranger sounds odd rather than friendly. Speed: these are said fast and half swallowed, so a learner who has only read them does not recognise them coming the other way. Play the audio on every line here, then say it along with the recording until you are running at the same speed. Slow and correct is not correct.

What to do with this page

Pick six pairs. Not sixty. Six, said out loud, both halves, until you can do them without looking. Then use them tomorrow with a real person and see which ones came back to you and which did not. The ones that did not are the ones to work on, and you will not know which those are by reading.
