This is the largest page in the library after the connectors, nine hundred and thirty two entries, and it is the machinery: the pronouns, the negation, the possession, the present tense, the small pieces that everything else is assembled from.
Algerian Darija is often described as having no grammar, usually by people who speak it. That is not true. What is true is that the grammar is small, regular and almost never taught, so learners meet it as a series of unexplained shapes rather than as a system. This page is the system.
Negation is the first thing to get right
The ma and the sh that wrap around a verb are everywhere: ما فهمتش, ما نعرفش, ما علاباليش, ما بقاش. Once you see the pattern you will see it in every second sentence on this site, and until you see it those sentences look like unrelated vocabulary. This one pattern unlocks more of the library than anything else here.
Pronouns and the endings that attach
حنا, نتوما and the rest, and then the endings that stick onto nouns and verbs to say whose and to whom. Algerian does a great deal of work with these short attached pieces, and an English speaker tends to look for separate words that are not there. Learn to see the ending as part of the word rather than as something missing.
Do not study this page in order
Nine hundred entries is not a syllabus, it is a reference. The way to use it is to come here when something on another page confuses you, find the pattern, and go back. Grammar learned in answer to a question you actually had stays; grammar learned in a block, in advance, does not.
What to do with this page
Start with three things and nothing else: the negation wrapper, the personal pronouns, and how to say I have. That is perhaps thirty entries out of nine hundred, and with them you can read most of the sentences elsewhere on this site and understand why they are shaped as they are. Everything else here will make sense later, and it will make sense much faster once those three are automatic.
